Fans of both the 49ers and Dolphins would have been hoping for far more to be at stake in this intriguing Week 16 matchup. Unfortunately, with both sitting at 6-8 there's very little to play for.
The 49ers have lost four of their past five, with injuries piling up across the board. Trent Williams and Christian McCaffrey will both miss this game, and with Brandon Aiyuk also on injured reserve the once vaunted 49ers offense has stalled. They're still moving the football (fifth in yards per play), but have failed to convert their chances this season, ranking 15th in points per game (22.4).
On the flip side, the Dolphins have also failed to launch, and are averaging just 19.7 points per game. However, Miami's defense is a top-10 unit against the run. Additionally, the Dolphins are in the top-12 in the NFL in both offensive and defensive EPA per play across the past four weeks. Plus, they've won four of their last six games.
Moreover, the Dolphins still have a very slim chance at making the playoffs should they win out. Kyle Shanahan's 49ers seem to be simply playing out a lost season. Back the Dolphins at home with the 1.5-point spread in Week 16.
