Odds To Be Next Head Coach Of The Carolina Panthers

One of the more disappointing teams in the NFL this season has been the Carolina Panthers, who are 5-7 SU through 12 games. They’ve since fired head coach Ron Rivera and while a few candidates have emerged as potential replacements, the offensive coordinator with the Baltimore Ravens has been tabbed as the fave to be the new sideline boss.

Online sportsbook Sportsbook has Greg Roman as the +300 betting favorite to take over in Carolina for the start of the 2020 NFL regular season. Roman has been the architect of the overpowering offense with dual-threat QB Lamar Jackson in Baltimore and some analysts believe he could rejuvenate QB Cam Newton’s career.

Next on the list is current Dallas Cowboys quarterback Jason Garrett, who is all but certain to be looking for work in the offseason with his firing expected sooner rather than later.

Following Garrett are the usual carousel of assistant coach candidates like Niners defensive coordinator Robert Saleh (+700), who seems to be on every NFL team’s wish list if they move on from their incumbent coach.

Why Greg Roman Is The Favorite

The NFL is a copycat league, so when the Baltimore Ravens designed an offensive system to exploit the talents of second-year quarterback Lamar Jackson, you know rival coaches and executives took notice. A lot of the credit can be given to offensive coordinator Greg Roman and the plays he’s installed that have launched Jackson right to the top of the discussion for NFL MVP.

That’s why Roman is the favorite to be hired as head coach for the Carolina Panthers, because they’ve got the OG of dual-threat quarterbacks in Cam Newton. Newton has struggled with injuries over the last three seasons and his MVP campaign in 2015 feels like a lifetime ago.

There’s the expectation that if the Panthers were to hire Roman, he could design plays that would utilize Newton’s best asset, his legs, to put him in a position to succeed while not taking many hits.

One of the standout stats for Lamar Jackson this season is he’s only been sacked 21 times despite averaging 11.6 rushing attempts per game, and while most of the credit goes to Jackson for being so elusive, the fact remains that Roman designed the scheme to not let him be put in harm’s way.

Dual-threat quarterbacks can sometimes be the hardest resource to tap and if Carolina doesn’t have intentions of moving on from the former MVP, it needs a coach who can cater to Newton’s skill set.
