One of the big questions with the new members of the Big Ten is how they will respond to the long trips back East. If you have not looked yet, Oregon, Washington, USC and UCLA have all gone BIG! Not too much data available yet because Oregon has not had to log that many air miles. The Ducks took a quick trip to Corvallis to take on Oregon State, then hit Vegas for two games before going to California for dates at USC and Stanford. This is the first trip back East where they hook Ohio State tonight, then Penn State before coming back home to Eugene.
Oregon's 13-2 mark is another excellent start for Dana Altman who can coach 'em up. We knew he was gonna be a star like 40 years ago when he complied a 123-24 record in the Community College ranks. Altman has been at Oregon since 2010 and has won at least 20 games every year. The other X & O guy, Jake Diebler, is the new kid on the block, and took over at Ohio State last February when Chris Holtmann was fired. Diebler guided the Buckeyes to an 8-3 record to finish the season and is siting at 10-5 so far this season. Edge Altman.
In their last outing, the Ducks posted an 83-79 win over a pretty solid Maryland team with Jackson Shelstad's 23 points leading the way. They got some gigantic minutes off the bench from Keeshawn Barthelemy (14 points) and Kwame Evans (10 points and 7 boards).
The Buckeyes squeezed out an 89-88 double OT win in their last game at Minnesota and needed 19 points from Devin Royal and 18 from Bruce Thornton to lock down the W. Speaking of points, Ohio State knows how to fill up the twine. With the exception of a stinker against Michigan State, a 69-62 loss, the Buckeyes have scored 95, 85, 103 and 89 points in the last four wins.
Ask me if I'm worried about the Buckeyes being exhausted after the double OT win at Minnesota? Nah. When they hit the court, they'll have had two full days rest. Looked at the team stats and these two are pretty much even in every offensive category. So where's the edge? Ohio State has won seven of nine at the Schottenstein Center on campus and should have enough in the tank to post a W against the Ducks.
