I've been selling Clemson the last couple of weeks. I hammered South Carolina's +125 ML vs Clemson last week, which I definitely hope you tailed. Don't get me wrong, the Tigers regrouped from their season debut loss to Georgia excellently by recording 40-points or more in five of the six games that followed. But come Week 11, I noticed the gears going off track.
Aside from an FCS game in Week 13 against Citadel, Dabo Swinney hasn't seen his group earn more than 24-points in the ladder half of the season. Then, inevitably, that 17-14 loss to the Gamecocks was the straw that broke the Tigers back.
Averaging 39.2 PPG, SMU is on a nine-game streak that has seen them score less than 30-points just once. Kevin Jennings is at the helm of the passing attack averaging 267.4 YPG (ranked 21st) while Clemson's passing defense is brutally middling, allowing 216.7 YPG. There's also the threat of the Mustangs run game, led by Brashard Smith's 1,157 yards and 14 touchdowns, the third-best mark in the conference.
Simply put, Clemson hasn't earned this spot an SMU has. The Mustangs are the better team on paper and going 8-4 ATS this season should be enough of a trend to cover the 2.5-points here.
