Texas Used To Opening The Season With A Win
The Texas Longhorns have traditionally started the season off on the right foot, with the team going 10-1 SU in their past 11 season openers. The lone loss in that span came last season when the Longhorns got trounced 38-3 against Notre Dame. Texas will have a chance to avenge that loss to open the 2016 season, as they take on the Fighting Irish.
Texas hired Sterlin Gilbert as offensive coordinator this offseason to try and rejuvenate a listless pass attack. The Texas running game should be fine with the duo of D’Onta Foreman and Chris Warren III chewing up defenses, but it’s the quarterback play that will be vital. Both Tyrone Swoopes and Shane Buechele are expected to see snaps at quarterback against Notre Dame.
Everyone is going to talk about the quarterback situation, but it’s the rest of the offense that is the real question mark for Notre Dame. The Irish watched their leading rusher and four of their top five receivers exit the program during the offseason – so somebody will need to step up. There is tons of potential, but whichever QB ends up getting the bulk of the snaps will need some help.
