You know that we love the history and pageantry at West Point, but there's some other history to talk about in this American Conference Championship game. And it revolves around Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall. Most teams and coaches have NO idea how to handle Army and its devastating rushing attack. Coach Sumrall KNOWS! Your boy Ecks had to do a deep dive into Sumrall's history page and here's what we found. We know that Sumrall coached at Troy for two years and posted an exceptional 23-4 record. But unless you looked at the fine print, you probably didn't see that his Troy Trojans played Army twice, and WON BOTH! And, held the Cadets to only 9 points in 2022, a 10-9 win, and fed the Army a 19-0 BAGEL in 2023.
If you're interested, here are the stats. Sumrall's kids gave up 279 yards on the ground in that 2022 game and only 177 yards last season. So Sumrall knows a little somethin' somethin' about stopping this Army rushing attack that is the BEST in the country at 312 yards per.
Time for LEGOmetrics. Sure Army has a sparkling 10-1 record, but are they REALLY a Top 25 team? Take a look at some of their opponents and you make the call. They started the season with Lehigh, then played Florida Atlantic, Rice, Temple, Tulsa, UAB, East Carolina, Air Force, North Texas, Notre Dame and UTSA. The only LEGIT team they played was Notre Dame and the Irish SMOKED 'em 49-14. So, again, the question is, is Army really a Top 25 team? My answer is, NAH! NOPE! NO WAY!
If you're looking at last week and noticed that Tulane lost to Memphis, don't be too concerned. The Green Wave knew that they already had a spot secured in the AAC Championship game and might have taken their foot off the gas.
Gotta throw you a few words about Tulane QB Darian Mensah. This freshman from San Luis Obispo, California, is having quite a season. He has completed 172 of 262 passes (65.6%) for 2,514 yards with 20 TDs and just 5 INTs. The other arm, Army's Bryson Daily, has thrown ONLY 76 passes and completed 43 (56.6%). So, you stop the run, you stop the Long Gray Line.
And finally, if you looked at Army's schedule, the Cadets have a tiny little meaningless game coming up next week against, yup, NAVY! Did anyone say LOOK AHEAD? If you're thinking Tulane, and we are, and you're a little nervous about laying the five, then punch in the money line and enjoy a nice deposit.
