Los Angeles News & Notes

Justin Herbert struggled with New England’s defense last Sunday in a 27-24 loss, going just 18-for-35 with 223 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. It was Herbert’s second straight underwhelming performance as he completed only 56.4 percent of his passes for 195 yards, one touchdown and one interception in Los Angeles’s 34-6 loss against the Baltimore Ravens.

The Chargers went 3-0 SU and ATS over their previous three games as Herbert threw 11 touchdowns and no interceptions over that three-game stretch.

This team will go as far as Herbert is able to take them. It isn’t uncommon to see young players struggle through some inconsistency in their second season in the NFL. Herbert will face another tough passing defense Sunday as Philadelphia ranks eighth in the NFL in pass defense, allowing only 220.6 passing yards per game.

Philadelphia News & Notes

The Eagles had no trouble at all dispatching the Detroit Lions last Sunday in a 44-6 blowout victory on the road as 3-point favorites. Jalen Hurts only needed to throw 14 passes in the win, completing nine of them for 103 yards with no touchdowns and no interceptions.

Hurts rushed for 71 yards on seven carries while Boston Scott and Jordan Howard combined for 117 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns on 24 carries.

Philadelphia improved to 3-1 ATS over its last four games with the win and cover. Prior to that four-game stretch, the Eagles had gone 0-3 SU and ATS over their previous three games. The Eagles will be counting on their passing defense this Sunday to give themselves a shot at an upset at home against the Chargers.

How Los Angeles Will Cover

If Justin Herbert plays well, the Chargers will win this game and cover the spread. Los Angeles is only two games removed from an 8-1 SU and ATS stretch; the Eagles are a team that they should be able to handle with a solid effort.

How Philadelphia Will Cover

Philadelphia can’t afford to get into a shootout against the Chargers. The Eagles are at their best when they take an early lead and establish the running game while allowing their defense to hone in on the passing game. That game script is the clearest path to an upset win or cover for Philadelphia in this one.
