Pats Have Been a Money Cover When They've Also Won
If Jeff Fisher waited to start Jared Goff to make him look bad by comparison, he played this one perfectly. With the Rams playing the Patriots in Week 13, Goff’s first two career NFL quarterback matchups will have come against two of the best signal-callers in the history of the game. This will be a tough one for the rookie QB but maybe he can learn some lessons from his counterpart this week.
LA is clearly outmatched in this one and opened laying 13.5 points to New England. The Pats struggled to get by the lowly Jets in their last outing and failed to cover but in all fairness were dealing with multiple injuries, including a banged-up Tom Brady – a pretty important piece to the Patriots’ winning puzzle.
A weird – probably useless – trend for the Pats is that they are an awful 1-8-1 against the spread in their last 10 games in Week 13. Obviously, these games all have very little – or nothing – to do with each other but if we see the same New England team that almost blew it against the Jets in Week 12, the Rams could easily cover this enormous spread.
With all that said, New England has been an excellent spread bet all season – going 8-3 ATS – and has covered in all but one of its nine wins. This hardly needs to be said but the Patriots are as close to a lock as you can get to win straight up against the Rams this week, meaning their chances of covering are pretty darn good – considering the trends.
Bill Belichick is developing a two-headed monster in the Patriots backfield with spare parts Dion Lewis and LeGarrette Blount that combined for 125 total yards against the Jets. These two could be in for a field day against a Rams defense that just allowed Mark Ingram and Tim Hightower to gain 272 total yards against them.
That stat is important as the Patriots are 5-0 SU and ATS this year in games in which they’ve rushed for over 100 yards. LA has allowed over 100 rushing yards in two of its last three games.
