Everything was in place for the Chargers early in the first half on Monday night and they bolted out to a 10-0 lead. The Ravens came back with two TDs, and even though they trailed by a point, 14-13, LA's passing game and running game were clicking. But the injury to RB J.K. Dobbins toward the end of the half totally turned the game around.
Dobbins was SO ready for his reunion with the Ravens. He spent four years in Baltimore, but after a solid 2020 season (805 yards with 9 TDs), the injury bug hit hard. He missed the entire 2021 season, played only eight games in 2022 and just one in 2023. Things were going very well in the first half on Monday, with J.K. gobbling up 40 yards on six carries -- an impressive 6.7 yards per tout. And Dobbins was enjoying his best season, ranking 12th in the league in rushing yards (766) and ninth in rushing TDs (8). So it's no surprise that L.A. totally fell flat in the second half without J.K., getting out-gained by the Ravens 217-83. Ouch! And most of those 83 yards came in garbage time when Baltimore was up 30-16.
Justin Herbert had a decent evening completing 21 of 36 for 218 yards, but there must have been at least FIVE dropped balls. Ouch Ouch! We had a tickle to the Chargers because Roquan Smith was out, but the big play was UNDER 0.5 an interception for Herbert. We looked at the entire season, and Justin has been MONEY in that category, with ONLY 1 INT so far. He averaged 10 INTs in his first four years, so if you find that prop this week, Under 0.5 an INT, hit it HARD!
The Falcons enjoyed the bye week after getting SMOKED by the Broncos 38-6, and losing to the Saints before that, 20-17. If you look at Atlanta's 6-5 record, you're probably wondering how it was built. LEGOmetrics baby. The Falcs posted a shocking 22-21 win against the Eagles in Philly back in the second week. That was the ONLY team that Atlanta beat with a winning record.
And just to circle back to that blowout at the hands of the Broncos, Denver rookie QB Bo Nix was INSANE. He clicked on 28 of 33 passes (84.9%) for 307 yards and FOUR TDs. Thinking that Herbert should be able to put some points on the board as long as his WRs get the good STICKY GOO on their gloves.
We were gonna lean toward LA in this spot, but after Dobbins went down, it's not a road we want to travel. Also looked at how the Falcons bounce back after a blowout loss of 20 points or more and the answer is, pretty good. They were rocked by the Seahawks 34-14 then found a W down in Tampa with a 31-26 win over the Bucs.
Expecting Captain Kirk Cousins to find some holes in the LA defense which makes this an ATL pick. But just a tickle please.
