Winning the actual group isn't the be-all or end-all when it comes to winning the competition. Since 1980 we've seen 11 UEFA Euro tournaments, in those 11 tournaments six of the eventual champions won their group, while five did not.
Famously, Portugal won the 2016 title but finished third in Group F behind Hungary and Iceland.
Champions By Group
Take this stat with a grain of salt because the group naming convention and the number of groups haven't been consistent. Group A (or Group 1 in some years) has produced the most eventual champions with three.
That Group E has yet to produce a champion shouldn't faze any of us. Perhaps Belgium will change that this year.
