Any doubts over whether or not the Doncic and Kyrie Irving dynamic could thrive in action have been quickly eradicated, with the two superstar ball-handlers having found a groove with their respective roles while not diminishing the strengths of the other. They were two of only three players on the roster, however, to average 10 or more points during Dallas' 22-game playoff sprint. The addition of former Splash Brother Klay Thompson should help rectify that.

No team in the West has competed in consecutive Finals since the Golden State Warriors went to five straight from 2015 through 2019, so recent history doesn't bode well for the Mavericks' chances.

Best Bet: Dallas Mavericks To Win Southwest Division, +160

Not having the greatest odds to represent the Finals once again isn't a slight against the Mavericks, but more of an indicator of the parity in the West and just how difficult the road will be for any team to emerge from the pack. Dallas needed to address its outside shooting, not because it struggled in that department as a whole, but because the Doncic-Irving tandem required more consistency from their teammates when cutting and dishing. Having arguably the second-best shooter ever in Thompson will make a world of difference in the playoffs, and adds another wrinkle to a Mavericks offense which just ranked seventh in the Association (113.3 points per 100 possessions).

The time will come when head coach Jason Kidd needs to permanently insert Dereck Lively II into the starting lineup for his length and shot-blocking to help compensate for the defensive limitations of his backcourt, which rings true even more so if Thompson slots in alongside Doncic and Irving. If that adjustment comes to fruition, Dallas will be much better off.

Keep an eye on how the Southwest Division odds seesaw over the next several months, because while the Mavericks are favored now, the four teams lurking behind them will cause these numbers to go up and down in a dizzying fashion. That's when the true value will shine through.

The Mavericks finished with a 50-32 record in 2023-24, marking the second time in three years that the franchise managed to win at least 50 games. It was a 12-win improvement over the prior season, as well, and to hit the OVER on the total oddsmakers have currently set forth, all Dallas will replicate that mark.

Best Bet: OVER 48.5 Wins, -110

Only four teams had a better record than the 18-9 Mavericks following the All-Star break, and that included a stretch in which Dallas went 16-2 from March 7 through April 10.

That momentum then carried forth to the playoffs, so it was more than just a flash in the pan. It's what the Mavericks are capable of when everything clicks, and they've only gotten more formidable.

Dallas went 2-2 in West Group B during the inaugural in-season tournament for the NBA Cup and failed to qualify for the knockout stage. They'll have to contend with the Nuggets, Pelicans, Warriors, and Grizzlies this year in West Group C, which will undoubtedly be the hardest group to get out of.

Best Bet: Luka Doncic For NBA Most Valuable Player, +330

Doncic's third-place finish in Most Valuable Player voting last season was the highest of his career, and a case could be made that he was the most deserving of the hardware despite garnering fewer votes than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and eventual three-time recipient Nikola Jokic.

The 25-year-old led the Association in points per game (33.9), ranked second in assists (9.8), second in made 3-pointers per game (4.1), and eighth in steals (1.4). He became the first player in history to average at least 32 points, nine rebounds (9.2), and nine assists per game for a season, as well.

An MVP win for Doncic is only a matter of time, and it could come as early as next year. His numbers only continue to skyrocket, and he'll become increasingly more difficult to ignore for these end-of-season awards.
