Golden State Warriors 2024-25 Season Preview, Betting Odds

The Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Klay Thompson trio which helped win the organization four NBA championships is no more, so the Golden State Warriors must now embark on a journey to potentially relive their glory days once again sans the services of one-half of the infamous Splash Brothers.

The writing was on the wall that Thompson would be moving on to get the Warriors back under the tax threshold, so a sign-and-trade involving multiple teams was undoubtedly the best-case scenario for Golden State to recoup assets and avoid losing the legendary sharpshooter for nothing.

Landing Kyle Anderson and Buddy Hield in said deal is a win for a player entering the twilight of his career. Anderson is a serviceable backup for a roster looking to move young pieces like Jonathan Kuminga, Moses Moody, and Brandin Podziemski into more prominent roles, and Hield is a career 40 percent 3-point shooter who converted attempts more efficiently than Thompson this past year.

Best Bet: Golden State Warriors To Win Pacific Division, +400

The Warriors remain in win-now mode to accommodate Curry during what will likely be the final years of his career after he inked a one-year extension to take him through the end of the 2026-27 season. The elephant in the room being Thompson's playing time and how many minutes he should be receiving amongst an up-and-coming core is no longer a distraction, so the team can turn its attention towards continued growth and development from their Kuminga-Moody-Podziemski unit while still maintaining credibility in the Western Conference.

The Pacific Division will likely be a bloodbath battle to the top just like it was last season with five games separating all inhabitants. The Los Angeles Clippers watched Paul George walk to the City of Brotherly Love, the Los Angeles Lakers made no noticeable changes to their roster, and the Phoenix Suns didn't do much to address their numerous defensive issues. The Sacramento Kings acquired DeMar DeRozan, but a conversation can be had over whether or not they're any better than the Warriors even with that addition.

The margins are razor thin here, and with some of the opposition having gotten noticeably worse and/or maintaining the status quo, the door is wide open for Golden State to take the division for the first time since 2019.

Odds as of September 2, 2024

Oddsmakers do foresee a slight drop in the victories department for the Warriors, penciling their win total in at 43.5 after winning 44 and 46 games the last two seasons, respectively. A 46-36 record in 2023-24 was Golden State's second strongest since the team won its last title in 2019.

Best Bet: OVER 43.5 Wins, -110

The Warriors should be better off with Anderson and Hield than they were with Thompson, who was already fairly one-dimensional and became even more so in recent memory. They didn't get worse while other teams in the West are projected to take a step back, especially in Golden State's division.

At least 44 wins is doable, and with Curry set to turn 37 years old by the end of the season, the team can rest easy knowing there are plenty of options around him to make life a little more easy.

Golden State ended the inaugural in-season tournament with a 2-2 record in West Group C, failing to qualify for the knockout round. It currently holds down the worst odds to take West Group C this time around, albeit in a "Group of Death" alongside three teams which won 49 games or more plus a now healthy Memphis Grizzlies.

Best Bet: Jonathan Kuminga For NBA Most Improved Player, +1000

In rumored trades for the likes of Paul George and Pascal Siakam, the Warriors were adamant about not adding Kuminga in any potential packages. The front office views the 21-year-old forward as indispensable and a major building block in a post-Curry world.

Kuminga averaged career highs in points (16.6), rebounds (4.8), and assists (2.2) across 74 appearances last season, and his production should only grow, even with there being questions over whether or not he'll even start. He made 46 starts for Golden State, but could end up playing behind Green, Andrew Wiggins, and Trayce Jackson-Davis.

Truth be told, Kuminga is a better player than all three of those aforementioned names, so the leash needs to be taken off sooner rather than later to allow him to reach his full potential. Oddsmakers peg him as an early favorite for Most Improved Player in what's a tight race so far, but whether or not he does end up receiving the honor will come down to his minutes and where head coach Steve Kerr places him in the rotation.
