The stain of coming off the worst season in franchise history, paired with an historic 28-game losing streak while tying the record for the most players to have taken the floor over the course of the year at 31, is one that won't be easily washed away for the Detroit Pistons.
In this 2024-25 season preview, we analyze all of the Pistons' betting odds coming off a summer in which the front office made a noticeable effort towards reshaping a mediocre roster to hopefully cleanse the palate of those still recovering from a demoralizing campaign.

Like vintage WCW Chris Jericho reciting all 1,004 of his holds, the list of problems which plagued the Pistons was seemingly endless. From cornerstone Cade Cunningham needing to constantly answer for the team's shortcomings to the highest-paid head coach ever in Monty Williams struggling to conjure sensible rotations, albeit with a team that was largely unchanged after winning just 17 games the year prior, Detroit simply couldn't have anything go its way.
Missing out on the No. 1 pick in the 2024 draft despite possessing the best odds was the toxic cherry on top of a melted sundae. General manager Troy Weaver was eventually ousted by incoming president of basketball operations Trajan Langdon after the Pistons went 74-244 during his four-year tenure.
Best Bet: None
Unlike the previous summer in which next to nothing occurred, Detroit at least made some noteworthy moves towards recouping some morsel of respect by acquiring talent who can immediately contribute like former Piston Tobias Harris, sharpshooter Malik Beasley, and veteran wing Tim Hardaway Jr. That, paired with the continued development of Jaden Ivey, Jalen Duren, and Marcus Sasser, will hopefully keep Detroit from finishing last in the Eastern Conference for a third-straight year.
With that being said, Detroit's drought of missing the postseason since 2019 will still continue, and with the absolute worst odds in these aforementioned futures, there's zero reason to wager on the team's success.
Detroit Pistons' 2024-25 NBA Win Total, Make Playoffs Odds
Team | 2024-25 Win Total | OVER | UNDER | Odds To Make Playoffs |
---|---|---|---|---|
Detroit Pistons | 24.5 | -115 | -105 | +1200 |
Odds as of October 17, 2024 at FanDuel
The Pistons have failed to win 30 percent or more of their games for four-straight seasons, with the team's 14-68 record (.171) beating out their previous low mark of 16-66 (.195) established in 1979-80.
Best Bet: OVER 24.5 Wins, -115
Oddsmakers setting the early win total at 24.5 is quite the leap, as Detroit would need to win 11 more games to hit the OVER at minus money.
It's not unrealistic, but things couldn't possibly get any worse for the organization, and the roster appears to be far more legit with the new blood brought aboard. A 25-win season at the bare minimum would sadly still be a huge step in the right direction.

Team | NBA Cup Odds | East Group B |
---|---|---|
Detroit Pistons | +25000 | +1600 |
Odds as of October 17, 2024 at FanDuel
The Pistons were winless in East Group A at 0-4 during the inaugural in-season tournament, and could end up in similar fashion this time around in East Group B needing to compete with the Milwaukee Bucks, Indiana Pacers, and Miami Heat who all have at least 3-to-1 to take the top spot.

Best Bet: Cade Cunningham For NBA Most Improved Player, +3000
Even though he was taken first overall in 2021, many players from that class appear to be leaving Cunningham in the dust, and perhaps much of that can be attributed to Detroit being a complete afterthought. Scottie Barnes has made an All-Star team, Evan Mobley has already become one of the Association's top defenders, Franz Wagner and Jalen Suggs have seen sizeable playoff action, and Jalen Green and Alperen Sengun are leading a resurgent Houston Rockets squad.
Cunningham averaged 22.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 7.5 assists in his third full year in the Motor City, and if you were to stand on that alone while taking away the context of how putrid the Pistons were, that production would be some of the best across the league coming from just a 22-year-old playmaker. It's easy to gloss over how formidable a talent Cunningham is considering where he plays, so if Detroit can become more relevant, that will lead to more eyes and ears paying attention.
Eleven players currently have greater odds in the Most Improved Player race, including the aforementioned Barnes and Mobley, so this is a stretch to think Cunningham can capture the hardware. Building off of what is already stellar numbers will take some hard work, as well, so much of his support will need to come from the Pistons as a whole working their way up from the bottom with Cunningham receiving a bulk of the credit.
