Brooklyn Nets 2024-25 Season Preview, Betting Odds

There's only one way to go for the Brooklyn Nets and that's right to the bottom of the standings, which became the obvious blueprint after moving their best player across the river this summer for a treasure trove of draft picks.

In this 2024-25 preview, we'll showcase all betting odds for the Nets for what will undoubtedly be one of the least watchable and overall worst seasons the franchise has ever experienced.

The Nets and neighbouring New York Knicks hadn't made a trade together since 1983, but clearly in an effort to make up for lost time, a blockbuster deal which sent Mikal Bridges to the Knicks became a declaration by Brooklyn that it was throwing in the towel and bracing itself for 82 games of heartache to secure a high 2025 draft pick.

Bridges is a fringe All-Star miscast in a leading role, but the Nets ultimately did right by him in shipping him off to Madison Square Garden. This, however, has left Brooklyn without a true face of the franchise, although securing a top lottery pick should rectify that immediately.

Best Bet: None

It's going to be a rough go for first-year head coach Jordi Fernandez, who is coming off a disappointing showing in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games after Canada failed to medal in the men's basketball competition. His new roster isn't devoid of talent, at least, especially with big man Nicolas Claxton returning on a new four-year contract, along with the combined offensive horsepower of Cam Thomas and Cam Johnson.

Oddsmakers don't see any path towards immediate success for the Nets, though, as the team currently possesses the worst odds across the board in all of their futures. The Bridges deal made it abundantly clear how the front office views this upcoming campaign, almost to the point where further trades could manifest if the team isn't bottoming out as it should.

Brooklyn gutted their assets to bring aboard a Big Three of Kevin Durant, James Harden, and Kyrie Irving which fizzled out quickly and left the organization with little to rebuild. The picks from New York provide some stability for the future, which is the only direction the Nets should be looking in because the here and now is incredibly bleak.

Odds as of September 8, 2024

Brooklyn's 32-50 record in 2023-24 was its worst winning percentage (.390) since 2018 after finishing 28-54 (.341). It also ended the team's five-year streak of qualifying for the playoffs, although the Nets only advanced beyond the first round once during that stretch, including three instances in which they got swept.

Best Bet: UNDER 18.5 Wins, +108

An OVER/UNDER of just 18.5 victories means oddsmakers believe Brooklyn will struggle to win half as many games as it just did. Losing Bridges is a massive blow, mind you, but even so, this is an incredible drop from one season to the next.

Again, much of this likely stems from the belief that the Nets have zero desire to win, which makes the UNDER far more intriguing at plus money. There's probably too much talent (and pride) to win 18 or fewer games, but we'll all know by the All-Star break how much Brooklyn values what's projected to be an all-time draft class and how much its willing to fall off to obtain a top-three pick.

Odds as of September 8, 2024

The Nets finished with an impressive 3-1 record in East Group A during the inaugural in-season tournament, missing out on advancing to the knockout stage due to point differential. They have by far the worst odds to emerge from East Group B in 2024, trailing far behind even the Charlotte Hornets who are at 17-to-1.

Best Bet: Cam Thomas For NBA Most Improved Player, +3000

Only 15 players across the Association scored 40 or more points on at least four occasions, with Thomas perhaps being the most surprising name on that list for those who don't keep up to date on Nets basketball. The 22-year-old did the same the prior season, as well, even though he only averaged just over 10 points per game at the time.

Thomas just finished seventh in Most Improved Player voting, earning 16 points which was well behind winner Tyrese Maxey's 319. The former more than doubled his scoring, albeit by taking 10 more shots per game, and finished the season as Brooklyn's leading scorer at 22.6 points to establish a new career high.

The Nets will be so much of an afterthought that Thomas will basically have to rank in the top-five in scoring to generate any sort of traction in this race, but this is by far the most plausible outcome of any player on the team for any end-of-season hardware barring Ben Simmons emerging from the sea of irrelevance.
