Buccaneers vs Chargers Picks Week 15

Chargers -3 (-104)

Winners of three straight games, the Buccaneers are suddenly surging into this matchup. However, their three opponents over that stretch have been the Giants (27th), Panthers (30th), and Raiders (28th), three of the worst teams in the NFL in terms of total DVOA. This West Coast road trip features a stiffer test against the Chargers, who rank 9th in total DVOA.

Justin Herbert has been playing as well as any quarterback in the NFL, leading the league in PFF’s passing grades with a stellar 22 big-time throws to five turnover-worthy plays since the team’s Week 5 bye. He performed admirably well on the road in Kansas City last week despite being without standout rookie Ladd McConkey, but he should return for this matchup.

The Buccaneers are dealing with significant injuries in the secondary, with Antoine Winfield Jr. suffering a knee injury and joining Jordan Whitehead and Mike Edwards on the injury report. That leaves this pass defense vulnerable with a below-average pressure unit. Todd Bowles will dial up the blitz per usual, but Herbert is the top-graded passer against the blitz in the NFL per PFF.

Meanwhile, Baker Mayfield’s production has declined after a stellar start to the year. He ranks just 25th in PFF’s passing grades since Week 6, with ten big-time throws to 12 turnover-worthy plays over that span. Chris Godwin’s season-ending injury left this wide receiver room very weak, while Bucky Irving was limited to just ten snaps last week with hip and back issues.

Home-field advantage isn’t worth a ton at SoFi Stadium, but the Chargers have a big-time special teams advantage. Los Angeles ranks 12th in special team DVOA, while the Buccaneers rank 25th. Back the Chargers to pick up the win at home.

Ladd McConkey OVER Receiving Yards

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers pass defense has struggled this season, and it will now be missing its top defensive back, Antoine Winfield Jr. Standout rookie wide receiver Ladd McConkey missed last week’s game, but he’s been stellar when on the field and should return this week.

The Buccaneers rank just 31st in pass defense success rate, and Herbert is PFF’s highest-graded passer since Week 6, so he should cook this week. Expect McConkey to be on the receiving end of much of that production, especially with Will Dissly now sidelined.
