Cleveland Cavaliers ATS -9.5 (-110), ML (-450)
What once would have been considered a marquee clash of the titans early in the season has been severely hindered by Philadelphia's 2-9 SU start, attributed to Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and Paul George all missing significant stretches due to injury. The team opened the 2024 NBA Cup on Tuesday with a 111-99 loss to the New York Knicks at the Wells Fargo Center, with Embiid producing just 13 points on 2-of-11 shooting with head coach Nick Nurse limiting his playing time to just 26 minutes in what was his first taste of action.
Embiid was on the record saying his days of playing on a back-to-back slate were over, but following the loss to New York, the former league Most Valuable Player did say he wanted to suit up against Cleveland, although his status is currently questionable as the Sixers' medical staff will evaluate him Wednesday morning.
Whether he's out there or not really holds no merit to siding with the Cavaliers here, both on the spread and on the moneyline. Cleveland has successfully covered in nine of its 12 victories so far with six wins coming by double digits, although its last two have come by an average margin of 5.5 points. The two sides also split their last season series 2-2 with three of the games determined by three points or less, but the circumstances are obviously different this time around.
This is the largest line of the season painting the Sixers as an underdog, and they're 1-5 SU and 2-4 ATS when facing such adversity with three-straight losses on both fronts. Embiid and All-Star teammate Paul George, at best, won't be at full strength if available, and with the Cavaliers averaging 123.1 points per 100 possessions on the road (first), it's going to be a nightmare for Philly to keep up on both ends of the floor.
UNDER 218.5 (-110)
The 76ers' offense looked out of sorts against a Knicks defense which barely ranks out of the bottom-third of the Association. Embiid was mostly immobile, and Karl-Anthony Towns looked like a Defensive Player of the Year candidate against him despite allowing opponents to shoot absurd percentages against him around the basket.
They rank 25th in offense and points scored since Maxey suffered a hamstring injury, and on no rest against a strong interior defensive presence of Cleveland, this game could be a slog on the scoreboard and favor an UNDER bet.
Cleveland Cavaliers vs. Philadelphia 76ers Player Prop
Darius Garland OVER 24.5 Points + Assists (-120)
Across his four appearances against Philadelphia last season, Darius Garland contributed averages of 21.8 points and 9.5 assists while converting 47 percent from the field. He also hit the OVER on 24.5 points and assists in each game, as well.
Now that number has been nailed in exactly of Garland's games this season, but he's never gone consecutive games without going OVER. After failing to do so in Cleveland's six-point win over the Chicago Bulls on Nov. 11, as the trend would suggest, Garland should be in store for an OVER on this prop on Wednesday.
