The Sacramento Kings have only qualified for the NBA playoffs once since 2006 and haven't advanced beyond the first round since 2004, yet the current makeup of their roster perhaps gives the franchise its best opportunity to finally make an impact when it matters most.
This 2024-25 season preview analyzes all betting odds pertaining to a Kings team that's won an impressive 94 games over the past two years, yet still craves a deep postseason run to cement their place in a crowded Western Conference field.

It's a testament to the strength of the West that a 46-36 record still forced Sacramento to claw its way through the play-in tournament to secure a berth, ultimately coming up just a tad short as the No. 9 seed and eventually falling to the New Orleans Pelicans for the final slot. The team ranked in the top half of the Association in both offense (13th) and defense (14th) and had the firepower to make a top seed sweat, but it just wasn't meant to be.
With the offseason acquisition of veteran guard DeMar DeRozan, the Kings now have another player who can create his own shot with a history of getting buckets down the stretch of tight games. Sacramento wasn't short on offensive weapons, mind you, and probably could have used another defensive wing, yet the cost was right for a player who just averaged 24 points per game in the Windy City and is motivated to capture the first ring of his career.
Best Bet: Sacramento Kings To Win Pacific Division, +240
Sacramento took the Pacific Division crown in 2023, but fell all the way to fourth place last season with just five games preventing it from repeating. Working in its favor now is the fact that the Los Angeles Clippers endured a massive blow by losing Paul George this summer, and the Los Angeles Lakers essentially maintained the status quo all the while hiring a head coach with zero experience on the job in JJ Redick. With Klay Thompson also gone from the Golden State Warriors, the Kings' core staying intact while adding a player like DeRozan should only benefit them over an 82-game slate.
Futures like championship and conference odds exist for a reason, but they're only relevant for a handful of teams, Sacramento not included. So much has to go right for them and so much has to go awry for pretty much everyone else for one of those wagers to connect, which is what makes divisional futures so intriguing when the field is limited to just five teams.
While their history of winning the Pacific isn't exactly vast, having prevailed in 2023 shows that such a feat can be replicated by the Kings. Oddsmakers certainly feel the same way, as only the Phoenix Suns at +155 have better odds.

Sacramento Kings | 46.5 | -104 | -118 | -194 |
Odds as of October 18, 2024 at FanDuel
Sacramento has strung together consecutive seasons of at least 46 victories for the first time since 2005 and 2006. It's also its first winning seasons since that period, as well.
Best Bet: OVER 46.5 Wins, -104
Oddsmakers wisely set the early win total at 46.5, meaning the Kings have to improve upon last year's mark by just a single game to hit the OVER here. That's a recurring trend with most team's totals, and one Sacramento can easily accomplish.
A final record of 47-35 would be the middle ground of what the team has finished with in recent memory. It's not cause for celebration, but it would still reach the OVER at plus money and set the Kings up for success heading into a plausible playoff appearance.

Sacramento took West Group C with a flawless 4-0 record during the inaugural in-season tournament. It would go on to lose 127-117 during the quarterfinals of the knockout stage versus the Pelicans. The Kings have the third-best odds to get out of West Group A in 2024 behind the Minnesota Timberwolves and Houston Rockets.

Best Bet: Malik Monk For NBA Sixth Man Of The Year, +550
Malik Monk came incredibly close to winning Sixth Man of the Year in 2023-24, finishing 10 points shy of eventual winner Naz Reid. Both players had identical amounts of second- and third-place votes, but Reid inched it out with two more first-place votes.
No player on the Kings has taken home the hardware since Bobby Jackson in 2003, but Monk is primed to end the draught. The front office rewarded him with a hefty four-year, $78-million contract extension after the 26-year-old guard had a breakout campaign with 15.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists as a reserve. Monk even earned himself some Clutch Player of the Year votes in the process.
He's currently sitting pretty with the best overall odds in this race. Only three players have ever repeated as Sixth Man of the Year (Kevin McHale, Detlef Schrempf, and Lou Williams), which helps Monk's chances of eking out Reid this go around.
